The St. Paul Curling Club will be hosting the State Seniors Bonspiel, January 13, 14 & 15, 2006. It is open to all Curlers over 50 years old. You must turn 50 by the end of the Curling Season, which is March 31, 2006. We have approximately 15 Curlers interested in going at this time and would lie to see 20-24 Curlers for a DL representation of 5-6 teams. St. Paul Curling Club is an impressive club to see and an honor to be able to curl there. We need to know the number attending so we can set up a block of rooms at the hotel.

  Raffle Tickets:
Raffle tickets will be going on sale by the end of December. We will be distributing four packets of tickets for each team, to be given to each team member. Ticket price is $2 per ticket for a cash drawing.

  Lakes Open Bonspiel:
: February 10, 11 & 12, 2006 is our Club’s Annual Lakes Open Bonspiel. This Bonspiel has been very successful for our club the past few years. We have had 32 teams entered with half of them coming from our club! We need your teams and support again this season to make it successful. Our local teams need to be available to clean ice between draws. Our slogan states: “The club that believes in having fun at Bonspiels.” Look for the poster at the club to enter. We have $6 off meal tickets and free beverages! Anyone interested in helping with the Bonspiel either now or the days of the event please contact us.

  Club Champions:
The Thursday Night League, UBC Team took home the hardware for the 2005 Club Championship. The UBC Team consisted of Lead – Viggo Thomsen, Second – Tom Flynn, Third – Mason Pender and Skip – Ron “I’d Rather WIN Dan LOSS”. Their names will go on the Club Trophy. The Bottom’s Up Team from the Monday Night Mixed League lost to them in the final. Thank you for all eight teams, top two from each League, for participating. This seasons Club Championship will be open to all club members on March 25, 2006.

Curling Tip:
Sweeping is what makes curling a team sport.  To be an effective sweeper pay attention to the rock's five-inch running edge.  Any excessive movement of the broom outside of the rock's path is wasted energy.  Speed and pressure generates friction on the ice which allows the rock to glide further and/or a straighter path. Skips will tell you the line of the rock and the sweepers need to know the weight.  Sweepers need to get a feel for the ice, observe the distance the rock will travel, the speed, and the rate at which the rock is slowing down.  Clean the line of delivery before every shot, stay with the rock until it comes to a complete stop, and be prepared for alternate shot calls "Plan B".  Taken from the USA Curling Association Brochure "Sweeping Power Play".
