Curling has arrived at the Olympics. We have posted the dates that Curling will be on TV, starting February 13 th and going to February 24 th. We have three members from Bemidji, Minnesota anchoring their teams: Cassie and Jamie Johnson on the Women’s team and Pete Fenson on the Men’s. When you go out to your neighborhood bar remember to have the Tellie tuned to Curling. When questions come up as to what the fuss is about, explain as best you can and invite them to come out to our curling club and we can have them watch and participate after the teams have played.

  Eight Ender:
I am happy to announce that the Tuesday night team of Maplewood Vets scored an Eight-Ender on January 10, 2006! The team consisted of John Evenson, Chris Evenson, Gene Ripley, and Mike Magnusson their Skip. This is the second time an Eight-Ender was scored in our 26 years of existence, the last was in 1980! An Eight-Ender is more difficult than a 300 in bowling and it rates up with a Hole in One in golf. An Eight-Ender happens when all rocks are counting in the house and your opponent’s rocks are not counting. Give each of these curlers a pat on the back and ask for a round of beer.

  States Super Seniors:
Mel Hodnefield , Bob Fick, Mike Nustad and Thaddeus Wilson won the Runner up honors in the Super Seniors Championship! The Minnesota State Seniors Bonspiel was held January 13-15, 2006 in St. Paul. 24 teams competing in the 50 years and older Bonspiel and 8 teams were classified Super Seniors. These 4 curlers combined age needs to total 250 years of age. As Thaddeus said, “Thank God Mel and Bob are 100 years old or we wouldn’t have qualified!”

The Super Seniors played in a Round Robin format – four teams in the A Division and four in the B Division, playing three games and the best records of each division play each other in the Championship. Mel, Bob, Mike and Thad had a 2-1 record and tied one other team, which they beat in Head-to-Head to give them first place in their division! Detroit Lakes had 4 teams representing our club, with two in the 50 and older and two in the Super Seniors. Pat these boys on the back and ask for a round of beer.

To all others I forgot to mention – Thank You!

Safety concerns:

  • Stretching and warming muscles before going out onto the ice can help prevent injury.
  • Step onto the ice with your gripper foot first, never step onto the ice with your slider.
  • Always put your slider foot up first when stepping off from the ice.
  • Never stop a rock with your hand. Your fingers can be crushed.
  • It is not recommended to use your foot to stop a rock because you could lose your balance. Use your broom to stop a rock.
  • Always carry your broom, which can be used to avoid or break a fall.
  • Watch for stray rocks and prevent them from sliding into people when clearing the house of rocks.
  • Keep rocks on the ice at all times, slide the rocks, never lift them.
  • Keep your feet on the ice, walk or slide, do not hop or run.
  • If you can’t keep up with a fast moving rock while sweeping, stop.
  • Never go onto the ice when your balance is impaired from sickness, excessive alcohol, etc.
